Orion Group finishes 2013 with double-digit growth in Hotel Division

Orion Group kicked off 2014 by launching their official PR, Media and Communications Department. This follows the rapid growth of their numerous divisions prompting the business heavyweight to incorporate the communications function in-house as opposed to outsourcing.

The main reason for the creation of the new department was to streamline communications and public relations for the group. Orion Group experienced tremendous growth last year which allowed the organisation to focus on major technology upgrades and infrastructure, building refurbishments, acquisitions and the development of its human-resources capital. This growth requires effective on-the-ground communications, public relations and media relations.

Michael Beggs, Group Marketing Manager for Orion said the advent of the information age requires reflex reactions and responses to emerging situations. “Time can be your best and the ability of an organisation to be able to communicate and produce prompt responses to any situation is paramount. I have found that having an internal PR and communications division keeps the PR and communication engine firmly entrenched in understanding the day to day idiosyncrasies and challenges of a large and liquid organisation. With fantastic new initiatives and an aggressive growth strategy for 2014, we look forward to building and nurturing relationships with the media and becoming a more effective partner,” he said.

Orion Group is one of the few large corporations that have kept key functions in-house without the need to outsource. Services such as cleaning, maintenance, construction management, security, hotel technology, IT and recruitment are all done in-house which allows the group to grow its corporate culture and save money on key functions.

Michael further added that due to savings from the aforementioned initiatives, Orion Group have been able to save millions.

“There are only two ways to maximise profitability in business. The first is to grow revenue and the second is to control expenditure and reduce costs. There is no other formula. My advice is that corporations need to take a long and hard look at in-sourcing key functions and initiatives,” he said.

Key Highlights for Orion Group in 2013:

• Double-digit growth in hotel group
• Establishment of a green energy division
• Successful establishment and growth of the Bakwena Spa and its brand
• Addition and completion of new shopping centre complexes
• Major building renovation projects completed
• Industry first distribution and technology systems for hotels and resorts
